Lubricating and re-tensioning your treadmill: why it requires attention?
The treadmill requires attention and regularity in monitoring and maintenance. In particular, it is essential to lubricate it to ensure smooth movement. Here is how to do it.
Check if lubrication is necessary on your treadmill
By lubricating your treadmill regularly, you benefit from better comfort, but also and above all you protect both the belt and the motor from premature wear.
For normal use, plan to lubricate approximately every three months, or every 200 kms. Do not wait for your treadmill to make a rubbing noise before lubricating it.
How to relax the running belt
Unplug the appliance (a necessary precaution before any intervention)
Loosen the carpet by loosening a bolt, with an Allen wrench or screwdriver depending on the model. (see the device manual).
Lift the mat slightly and run your hand under it. If the interior surface is dry, greasing should be carried out. (If you come out with a slightly greasy hand, all is well).
Lubricating a fitness mat in 6 steps
Have you noticed that lubrication is necessary? This intervention is simple. You can do it yourself.
Step 1: Obtain a suitable treadmill oil for belt, silicone-based. You can find it in an online lubricant store (like Kangaroo Autocare. Be careful, do not use oil or grease intended for any other purpose: you could clog the treadmill or even damage it.
Step 2: Unplug your device and relax the mat (see above).
Step 3: Lift the band slightly, and spray the best silicone oil for treadmill underneath. 3 to 5 sprays on each side of the carpet are sufficient.
Step 4: Reconnect the treadmill, then run it at low speed (approximately 3 miles per hour, normal walking speed) for 5 or 6 minutes. Thus the lubricant, very fluid, will be distributed over the entire interior surface of the belt.
Step 5: Unplug the treadmill again and blot all excess lubricant from each side of the treadmill with a soft cloth.
Step 6: Retighten the band, reconnect the treadmill. It’s over. See you in 2 or 3 months for the next lubrication!
Monitor the tension of the running belt of your device
The mat itself can relax over time. If this is the case on your device, you need to retighten it.
When to retighten the running belt?
- After about twenty hours of use following the commissioning of your treadmill,
- Regularly during normal use
- As soon as you hear unusual noises or notice abnormal operation (the belt slips, no longer offers a constant speed, runs jerkily, the motor overheats.
- If you can lift the running belt more than 2-3 cm on each side.
Conversely, a tape that is too tight can increase power consumption or cause tearing. The right measure: when you can lift the band only 2 or 3 centimeters.
As you can see, maintaining a treadmill is simple. It is also essential. Remember to do this regularly.
